Double-breasted suits are made to get you noticed, making them ideal for first impressions. Whether you’re wearing it in or out of the office, this suit has so much versatility. Guys believe that this type of suit is dated and I’m here to remind you that they are not! To make the most of a double-breasted suit it all comes down to a clean tailored fit accompanied with the right accessories.
Over the past year, I’ve been working at a European men’s destination store fitting and styling gents that come from all kinds of backgrounds. From my experience, finding the perfect fit and how to style a suit can change the way a man carries himself. One thing is for sure, a sharp tailored suit can get you noticed anywhere you go. Whenever I decide to wear my double-breasted suit, there are a few ways that I like to style it. Whether you’re at the office, heading to happy hour after work or going to Sunday brunch, this power suit makes a big statement.
Wearing Your Double-Breasted Suit 9 to 5:
Double-breasted suits can be worn at the office. I repeat, they can be worn! Of course you will stand out, but a little attention is never a bad thing. When pulling off this suit in a professional setting, stick to the basics and add small details to give you more flair.
Enhance your double-breasted suit by pairing it a paisley print knit tie or patterned pocket square. Keep in mind you do not have to match the tie, pocket square and shoes. Just as the long as the colors compliment each other, it will work. Less is always more! A solid white or blue business shirt is safe, but to make a solid suit more impactful, you can push it a little further by wearing a patterned or striped shirt. In addition, when choosing shoes to match your double-breasted suit, I always recommend a tassel loafer or a monk strap. These styles of shoes add a little more personality than a basic cap toe.
Dressing Down Your Double-Breasted Suit for After Work and Beyond:
Finally you’re off of work and heading to happy hour at that swanky bar and lounge. I frequently get asked how to dress down this suit. It’s my suggestion that you take the tie off and bust out your sneakers!
To give your double-breasted suit a more casual and relaxed feel, add a blue chambray shirt to your ensemble. I like to keep things simple and minimal as possible. With that being said, a colored border pocket square to your suit jacket pocket works just fine. To tie it all together, I recommend adding classic all white sneakers to your look because they always give a cool vibe to any modern suit. Who doesn’t like to be comfortable after a long day at work?
It’s ok to step outside of the box when it comes to choosing the right suit for work, a special occasion or a night out on the town. When it comes to styling your double-breasted suit, there are no limitations. I hope my tips inspired some of you out there! Ladies, be sure to share this post with the stylish man in your life.
