Styles in fashion come and go, but the best pieces are timeless. As each year passes, I develop a stronger sense of personal style. Although I like the occasional trendy clothing buy, I know that in order to get the most out of my closet, I need to have high-quality pieces in my wardrobe. Wardrobe staples are classic pieces in your closet that mix with almost anything. These items can spruce up your look and keep you on trend no matter what the season because they never go out of style. If you’re looking to add some longevity to your clothes and not sure where to start, I’ve listed 10 wardrobe staples below that are worth the investment.
1. Biker Jacket
Number one on my list of things to own is a biker jacket. I consider this type of jacket a staple piece because it’s versatile and ages well. Whether you’re sporting a casual white tee and jeans or a frilly gown, a biker jacket can add a little edge to your look. If you’re looking for a quality biker jacket with the right cut, check out the brand Pelechecoco.
2. Good Fitting Denim Jeans
A great pair of jeans can instantly flatter your figure. It’s a good idea to invest into two types of washes (medium to light + dark) that way you can blend them with a wider range of outfits. Don’t be afraid to try different brands and cuts of denim until you find the right ones. When considering the fit, the jeans should hug your body nicely without being uncomfortable. Nordstrom has a great variety of denim brands in various price points.
3. Crisp Black Pants
Black pants are a wardrobe staple because they adapt to any occasion. A well-fitted pair of black pants can go very far in your closet. Black is a sleek, mysterious and slimming color that I tend to gravitate towards frequently! Consider the shape and fabric makeup of the pant to decide if its worth the buy. Check out Need Supply for a fresh selection of trendy and classic black pants.
4. Denim Jacket
In addition to a biker style, every woman should have a denim jacket. Consider the fit and wash to get the most mileage out of your jacket. Determine if you want something more clean cut or distressed, more loose or fitted. Either way, you can’t go wrong. Madewell has a great selection of classic denim jackets along with other high-quality basics.
5. White Tailored Shirt
A crisp, white tailored shirt is another great wardrobe staple because it can be easily integrated into (and class up) any outfit. It’s versatile and timeless. You can wear it under a jacket, blazer, coat or layer it with a sweater for a preppy look. COS has high-quality white tailored shirts in traditional and modern cuts.
6. Basic Top
You can never go wrong with sleek basic tops. The right simple tee, tank or turtleneck can enhance any outfit. I like to look for cotton blends so that the garment is breathable but durable with a little stretch. Stick with neutral hues such as gray, tan, mauve, black and white. Everlane is a good place to shop for minimal styled basics.
7. Flattering Dress
Include a figure-flattering dress into your arsenal of wardrobe staples. Choose a simple cut dress that is able to transition between various occasions and is easy to wear. Consider the color. A neutral colored solid or printed fabric will get you through the seasons. Reformation has a stellar selection of simple and sexy dresses.
8. Minimal Jewelry
Your jewelry should also be versatile with the clothing you wear. Choose pieces that are simple in size and shape, and minimal enough to go with different outfits. Gold, silver and rose gold are some of my favorite metals. I tend to wear the same type of pieces from each color family and keep the styling simple as to not distract from my overall look. I like to shop Etsy for all of my minimalist jewelry.
9. Classic Sunglasses
A good pair of sunglasses will complete any look! When choosing your classic pair of shades, consider your face shape and color of the glasses themselves. I like a rose gold colored pair because they translate well with many outfits. Shop Ray-Ban for the ultimate selection of timeless frames.
10. Universal Go-to Bag
A collection of wardrobe staples isn’t complete with the proper bag. Your go-to bag should be sized appropriately for your daily needs. I prefer a crossbody model because it’s lightweight and transports well. When choosing a bag, go for neutral colors in a fabrication that will wear nicely over time. I’m in love with Mansur Gavriel bags, they have a beautiful classic ease to them that will accompany any outfit.
I hope you find this list as a good starting point to add some snazzy new wardrobe staples to your closet. Do you own any of these staples or have any classic pieces to add to the list? Let me know in the comments below!
