Quick and Essential NYC Style Tips

New York is a ferocious and energetic city that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. If it’s your first time traveling to the Big Apple, you may not know what to expect or how to pack for travel. We visited New York for our anniversary two weekends ago and stayed at the Arlo hotel in Soho. From sightseeing to eating tasty food and the superb shopping, we enjoyed a fabulous time. Based on our experience in New York, I’ve gathered up some fashion tips to help you navigate NYC with ease and style.

Dress for the Weather

Upon arrival, the weather in NYC was nuts! We checked the weather up until the day we left to discover that the city was a sunny 73 degrees when we arrived and drastically dropped to a rainy 45 degrees upon leaving. It is imperative that you pack a weather safe jacket and layers depending on the time of year you travel. April marks the beginning of New York City’s rainy season so we made sure to bring a travel umbrella and poncho in case of last minute downpours. Unfortunately it did rain the last two days we were in the city, but it wasn’t much of an inconvenience because we were well-equipped. It was a plus that our hotel offered complimentary umbrellas to use in our hotel room during our stay. I got my weather-proof camo puffer from Forever 21 and it kept me warm and dry the entire weekend.

Be Comfortable But Stylish

Keep in mind that NYC is a highly pedestrian-heavy city. You’re going to be doing a ton of walking regardless if you take a taxi, Uber, Lyft, subway, etc. so be prepared for the long haul. In the short time that we were in New York, I’m certain we walked thousands of steps and covered a few miles in total. Bring comfortable shoes such as stylish tennis shoes (NYC folks are big on trendy sneakers) and dress appropriately for walking. Consider breathable clothing that you can move in with ease. Think stylish comfort! I got around the city in my comfy black Zara joggers.

Keep it Simple and Sleek

From what we saw, New Yorkers keep it chic and on-trend by keeping their styling distinct and minimal. Think neutrals such as black, white, grays  and tan hues to get you through the weekend. You can’t go wrong with packing a biker or denim jacket to finish off your looks. Consider simple, versatile pieces that you can blend with each other. It’s easier to mix and match these colors and pieces so you’ll fit in right with the rest of the locals. Plus if you pack light initially, you can save space in your bag for any purchases you make in the city. I love to get my basic essentials from COS.

Wear the Right Bag

Depending on what you’re doing for the day, it’s a good idea to wear a bag that is easy to transport with a lot of compartments. If it’s your first time in the city and you’re doing some shopping along with sightseeing, its good to have a nice size bag to store any purchases or travel essentials you may have. I got my backpack from Hunter and I consider it a great buy. It’s a limited edition color way, waterproof and has a ton of space for everything, including my DSLR camera. It’s a great size, not too big or too small and travels well. Get it at a great price here.

These tips are sure to help you prepare the right way for your next vacation to New York City. New York is such a massive and overwhelming place so hopefully my suggestions will help make your next trip fun, easy and enjoyable!
